Best Dressed Vest

Vests are back!

You might love 'em, you might hate 'em....but you can't get away from them!

Sweater vests are making a comeback and I'm loving it!

I wanted to design this sweater vest as simple as possible.

It's very easy and perfect for beginners.

The very first date I went on with my husband....we actually dressed the same.....and WORE VESTS! 😂

Adorbs! #meanttobe

Before we get into the pattern, I need to talk about this crazy soft chunky yarn.

Biggo is the yarn you've always wanted!

It's a super soft blend of Superwash Merino and nylon in a bulky weight.

Making an entire blanket or an oversized sweater

in this would be so cozy to curl up in.

Notes before you begin:

  • Chain 2 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as the first DC in that row.
  • The front and back panel are identical and worked up first, then seamed at the shoulders and sides.
  • The ribbing around the arm and neck are worked up separately and attached to the vest
  • I made a size small (shown in all pictures).
  • Keep in mind this yarn will stretch with multiple wears, I would suggest sizing down. (you can contact me and let me know how many inches wide you'd like your panel and I can calculate for you, sizes below are suggestions, you know best how you would like it to fit.)

Row 1: SC in 2nd from hook. SC in the next 5 sts. Turn. (6)

Row 2: Ch 1. SC BLO in every stitch. Turn. (6)

Repeat Row 2  until Row 30(32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52)

*Note: you can continue ribbing and hold it up against where it will sit on your body - most likely on your waist - and complete as many rows you need)

**Now continue pattern on top of of the ribbing**

Row 1: DC in every stitch on top of the ribbing (this will be equal to how many rows you completed in your ribbing, for example: 32 rows in your ribbing, will be 32 DC across). Turn.  <30(32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52)>

Shaping armhole on panel:

Join yarn at 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5)th stitch.

Row 9 (10, 11, 12, 13, 13, 14): DC across, leaving the last 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5) stitches unworked. Turn.

Repeat Row 9 (10, 11, 12, 13, 13, 14) until Row 16 (17, 20, 22, 24, 24, 25)

*You can add/remove rows to make your vest longer/shorter.

Do not fasten off!  We will now begin the shoulder shaping.

Row 17 (18, 21, 23, 25, 25, 26): Ch 2. DC in the next 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11). Turn.

Repeat Row 17 (18, 21, 23, 25, 25, 26) once more.

Sl st.

Fasten off.

Now attach yarn to other side of panel (shape other shoulder): Ch 2. DC in the next 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11).

Repeat once more.

Sl st.

Fasten off.

Seaming:

Lay both panels on top of each other.

Seam shoulders using a whip stitch.

Seam sides up to Row 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13) + bottom ribbing using a whip stitch.

Once this seaming is complete, this is the wrong side of the vest.

Ribbing for arm (make 2 alike):

Ch 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5).

Row 1: SC in 2nd from hook. SC in all sts until end of the row. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1. SC BLO in every stitch. Turn.

Repeat Row 2  until Row 32(34, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52)

Now attach the ribbing to each arm using a whip stitch on the WS of the vest.

Ribbing for collar:

Ch 3.

Row 1: SC in 2nd from hook. SC in the next 1 st. Turn. (2)

Row 2: Ch 1. SC BLO in every stitch. Turn. (2)

Repeat Row 2  until Row 36(40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)

*Note: you can make the ribbing thicker by increasing your initial chain #, this will create a higher collar or even better - a turtle neck!

Now attach the ribbing to the collar using a whip stitch on the WS of the panel.

Weave in all ends, turn inside out!

All done!
