Hello Summer Halter Top

When I first started to crochet in 2014, I was making so
many garments and not writing down the patterns.

One of my favourite designs is this one… simple halter, with criss cross detail in front, backless, easily adjustable, and made up of just 2 identical panels.

Definitely beginner friendly and perfect for the Summer.
Pair it with jeans, shorts, or even over your bikini top!

I used Lily Sugar’N Cream in the colourway Sage Green.
This pattern works up very quickly…who doesn’t like quick wips?

Lily Sugar'N Cream is one of of my favourite cotton yarns for Summer projects, look at all the fun bright colours you can choose from on yarnspirations.com!

Ready?

Let's make The Hello Summer Halter Top

Notes before you begin:
-the amount of initial chains you start with should measure out to half of the front of your torso (hold the chain up to where you want the halter to sit, your chain should run from your belly button to your love handle)
-the more chains to start will make it wider, the less chains to start will make it shorter
-my initial chain of 30, makes a size small
-this halter top is made up of 2 panels: both to cover the front, identical in size, no seaming required
-I used 1.5 balls of Lily Sugar’n Cream in Sage Green

OTH Crochet Nook Pattern: Hello Summer Halter Top

Skill Level:
 Easy

Materials:
Lily Sugar’n Cream
Size H [5.00 mm] crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Abbreviations:
CH = Chain(s)
SC = Single Crochet
SC2TOG = Single Crochet Decrease (single crochet to bring 2 stitches together)
SK = Skip stiches

Instructions:
The instructions are written for size S.  If changes are necessary to make a larger size, add the desired amount of chains.

FRONT PANEL (make 2 alike):

Ch 31 (increase or decrease this number to change size)

1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook.  1 sc in each ch to end of chain. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each ch, leaving last 2 stitches, SC2TOG in last 2 stitches. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each stitch until end. Turn.

*repeat Row 2 and 3 until panel ends with 1 stitch, SL ST (your panels should look like the picture below)

DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

You can now make the chains you need that will secure the top around your neck

Ch 30 or more, SL ST, fasten off.

ADDING LOOPS FOR THE CRISS CROSS:

You are now going to create loops along the straight edge of each panel (this is where you will be threading through the chain to make the criss cross)

Attach yarn to bottom of straight edge.

Ch 3, skip 2 stiches, sc in next*

*repeat until you reach the top of the panel, SL ST, fasten off
*complete the same on the other panel along the straight edge

ADDING CHAINS TO SECURE TOP AROUND YOUR WAIST

You are now going to add chains to the bottom of each panel that will hug around your waist

Attach yarn to the bottom of the decreased edge.

Ch 30 or more, as many as you need to tie around you.

SL ST, fasten off.

CRISS CROSS CHAIN

Now, create the chain that will be threading in between the loops to connect both panels.

Ch 160, or more/less – depending on how long you need it.
This may take a few times of chaining, threading it through, trying it on, and adjusted the chains

And you're done!

I cant wait to see your Hello Summer Halter Top!

  1. When I follow the pattern as written I reach the end at least 20 rows too short. Is there something missing?

  2. Hi there! For the front panel after we complete all the row decreases, it says SL ST. Are we slip stitching around the entire panel? And then chain 30? Thanks!

    1. Just SL ST at the very top and then ch 30 for the tie around your neck

  3. I’m having the same problem as Aby (above). I’ve taken it all apart (frogged) 3 times. Now I’ve increased the chains and switched to a size K hook. I’m about 7-8 rows in and I think it’s still gonna be too short. I also have followed the pattern exactly. Am I missing something? Please help!
