Chain Reaction Top

Saying good-bye to Summer with this top.

Easily adjusted to any size and perfect with your fav pair of shorts or jeans, and would work so well as a bathing suit cover up (if you extended the length!)

This pattern is very beginner friendly, the only stitches you need to know: Double Crochets and chains - that's it!

I used Cotlin Reflections from We Crochet.  I was so drawn by all the striking indigo shades. The blues in this yarn are applied with different dye effects to create a wide palette, making it easy to mix, match and blend together.  It's a cool and lightweight Tangius cotton perfect for Summer projects.  Plus, it's durable and softens with every wash.

After you use this yarn once, you'll think of a million other ideas to use it!

Check out all the colors HERE.

Notes before you begin:

  • The beginning chain will indicate how long this top is. It measures from your shoulder to your waist, or if you'd like to make this a dress length, use the chain to measure from your shoulder to mid-thigh.
  • This top is made up of 2 identical panels, seamed at the sides and shoulders.
  • The chains are worked back and fourth as you normally would crochet, when you are ready to seam: the panels are laid flat with the chains running vertically (images below will help)
  • Chain 2 at the beginning of each row DOES count as a stitch

Let's get to the pattern!

OTH Crochet Nook Pattern: Chain Reaction Top

Yarn: Cotlin Reflections in Cirrus

Hook: 4.5mm Furls Crochet Odyssey Nickel

Legend:

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

SK = Skip

STS = Stitches

Gauge: 4" = 17 Double Crochets x 7 Rows

Sizing: *can be customized to any size based on initial chain - which will determine how long the panel is.  How many rows you will complete will determine the width of the panel (keep going until the width matches the widest part of your upper body) See more notes on sizing below.

More on Sizing:

Grab your measuring tape.

View the diagram below.

(A) measurement will represent how many CHAINS you will start with for each panel. (I started with 60 chains, my panel measurement was 16")

(B) measurement will represent how many rows you will complete.  (I completed 35 rows, my panel width measured 21")

Panel (make 2 alike):

Chain 60 (*an even number)

Row 1: DC in the 3rd chain from the hook, DC in the next 2 stitches, *Ch 8, Sk 8, DC in the next 3 stitches. Repeat from * until the end of the row. Turn.

Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as a stitch), DC in the next 2 stitches, *Ch 8, Sk 8, DC in the next 3 sts. Repeat from * until the end of the row. Turn.

Row 3 - 35: Repeat Row 2. (These rows represent the B measurement shown above, I completed 35 rows, you can complete as many as needed for your measurement)

Seaming:

Lay panels on top of each other with the chain rows running vertically.

Use single crochets or slip stiches to seam the shoulders and sides of the panels (leaving armholes)

When seaming around chains, add 8 SC. See image below

That's it!
